An ex-U.S. Attorney who worked during former President Joe Biden’s administration was found dead Saturday at her home in northern Virginia.

Jessica Aber was found unresponsive at her residence in Alexandria, police said in a social media post. She was 43.

Aber’s death was not considered suspicious, sources told ABC News. The former prosecutor had been battling a longstanding medical issue that was likely the reason for her death, a family friend told the outlet.

Her cause of death has not been confirmed by authorities. Virginia’s chief medical examiner will conduct her autopsy, Alexandria police said.

From 2021 to 2025, Aber served as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, one of the most influential districts across the country. She resigned in January 2025 ahead of President Trump’s inauguration.

Virginia’s eastern district includes the state’s population centers around Washington, D.C., and Hampton Roads. In total, more than 80% of the state’s population lives in the district. Aber’s staff included an estimated 300 prosecutors in offices throughout the region.

Multiple high-profile trials have occurred in the district, including an antitrust case against Google and the conviction of al-Qaeda member Zacarias Moussaoui in connection with the 9/11 attacks.

U.S. Attorneys are political appointees who almost always change in new presidential administrations. The position is currently held by Erik Siebert.
