A quartet of fifth grade girls in Arizona is accused of plotting to kill a boy in their class and make his death look like a suicide.

Law enforcement in the Phoenix suburb of Surprise said each girl had a role in the plot to lure their schoolmate into a bathroom and stab him in the stomach, reported Arizona Family, citing a newly released police report.

One of the girls was to bring the knife to school, while another would use it to gut the victim. A third girl would serve as a lookout, while the fourth would draft a suicide note that would appear to have been written by the boy.

The scheme was allegedly concocted during lunch and recess breaks at Legacy Traditional School last October. It was foiled when other students overhead the girls laying out details and alerted school administrators.

Police said the plan may have stemmed from a breakup between the girls’ unidentified target and at least one of his would-be killers.

When questioned, three of the suspects were said to express remorse while the fourth laughed and offered excuses. The girls, ages 10 and 11, were arrested on charges of threatening and misdemeanor disorderly conduct, according to Arizona Family.

A clinical therapist told local media that the young girls’ “underdeveloped” brains may have prevented them from comprehending the seriousness of the act they planned to execute.

Police in Surprise told Arizona Family that the students involved had been suspended pending expulsion at the time of the arrests, but declined to offer any further information on the case.
