Trump Organization expands Balkan connection with Romania deal

The Trump Organization plans to expand to Romania, as President Donald Trump’s family deepens its ties in the Balkans and pursues a lineup of new foreign deals.

The company will partner with local real estate developer SDC Imobiliare on Trump Tower Bucharest, according to a statement dated Friday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Romanian project would follow a plan by President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner to set up Trump Tower Belgrade in neighboring Serbia.

Representatives for the Trump Organization didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. Reached by WhatsApp, SDC’s Chief Executive Officer Ștefan Berciu did not immediately provide a comment beyond the press release.

In contrast to the president’s first term when the company said it would not pursue new foreign deals, the Trump Organization has embraced overseas partnerships since his January inauguration. The shift has allowed members of the Trump family to meld business ties with right-wing political influence — a phenomenon that has been on display in the Balkans, where democratic and autocratic influences are often in contention.

Trump’s eldest son Donald Trump Jr. demonstrated that dynamic with his visits to Eastern Europe since his father’s inauguration. He has met with regional politicians, including former Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta and former Bulgarian premier Boyko Borissov, both of whom left their positions amid corruption allegations. He also interviewed Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić on his podcast.

Trump Jr. shares the position of executive vice president of the Trump Organization with his brother Eric, its day-to-day leader.

The potential for a Trump-branded project in Romania already percolated locally early this year. Local media outlet Ziar de Cluj reported in January that SDC’s Berciu was planning “two very special real estate projects in the next four years,” including in Bucharest and in Cluj, another Romanian city. Berciu was photographed at Trump’s inauguration in January.

Kushner, who is married to Trump’s daughter Ivanka, has another resort project in Albania, though the resort will be branded Aman rather than Trump.
