Four of the 11 victims of a Saturday afternoon mass stabbing inside a Walmart store near Traverse City, Michigan, were in serious condition Sunday morning, while seven survivors of the attack were upgraded to fair condition by doctors at Munson Medical Center.
A 42-year-old male suspect is in police custody after allegedly stabbing 11 people in what Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael D. Shea called a "random" attack on shoppers in the checkout area of the Walmart near the Grand Traverse Crossing mall in Garfield Township, just south of Traverse City.
Six of the stabbing victims were male, five were female, Shea said Saturday. The sheriff did not know the ages of the stabbing victims or the extent of their injuries.
On Sunday morning, Munson Healthcare said seven of the victims were in fair condition, while four remained in serious condition.
"Over the past 12 hours, we’ve seen encouraging signs of recovery from our patients," Munson Healthcare said in a statement issued Sunday morning. "Our dedicated team of physicians, surgeons, nurses, clinicians, and support staff remain focused on providing a healing environment for all those affected by this tragic incident. Their unwavering commitment and compassion are a testament to the strength and resilience of our healthcare community. Additionally, we are working on providing additional emotional support for our employees in light of this incident."
Shea described the suspect as a 42-year-old Michigan man.
