A Colorado man was found fatally stabbed on the Caribbean island of Tobago after separating from his friends to purchase marijuana, according to local police.

The victim was identified on Friday as 43-year-old Christopher Brown, a builder from Silverthorne, ABC News reported.

Brown was found unresponsive late Wednesday night, with several stab wounds to his body and a “metallic object” protruding from his back, according to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Prior to his death, Brown spent the evening enjoying dinner with friends at Marguarite’s Local Cuisine in the small fishing village of Castara, police said. They then went to another bar, at which point Brown made his exit, telling his friends he wanted to buy some weed. From there, he walked along the village’s main road according to a police report.

Authorities found him around 10:30 p.m. local time, after they were called to investigate reports of a “motionless body bearing a stab wound to the back,” police said.

A 26-year-old local has since been arrested, but no charges had been filed as of Friday. Few other details were provided, and an investigation into the motive for the killing remains ongoing.

“The Division of Tourism, Culture, Antiquities and Transportation is profoundly saddened and deeply disturbed by the tragic murder of a foreign national in the peaceful community of Castara,” the agency said in a statement.

The Division strongly condemns this horrific act of violence and extends our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased during this unimaginably difficult time.”
