Trump doctor releases results of MRI scan to heart, abdomen

President Trump’s doctor Monday said recent MRI scans were performed on the president’s heart and abdomen, and showed the president remains in “excellent overall health.”

Hours after Trump vowed to release the results of the October MRIs, Dr. Sean Barbarella said the scans showed his major organs, key blood vessels, heart chamber sand valves were all “perfectly normal.”

“Advanced imaging was performed because men benefit from a thorough examination of cardiovascular and abdominal health,” Barbarella said in a brief statement. “This level of detailed assessment is standard for an executive physical at President Trump’s age and confirms that he remains in excellent overall health.”

Barbarella did not explain why the scans, which he described as “preventative,” were not done during Trump’s annual physical just a few months earlier, or if any new or worsening symptoms prompted the tests.

It wasn’t immediately clear how many scans were performed, although the statement implied separate MRIs may have done on Trump’s abdomen and heart.

Trump, who has for weeks brushed off demands for more health information, reversed course Sunday night and agreed to release the results, insisting that a scan was “perfect” even as he said he was not sure what part of his body was under examination.

Trump said he knew the MRI did not involve his brain because he said he “aced” a recent cognitive test.

“If you want to have it released, I’ll release it,” Trump said late Sunday during an exchange with reporters as he flew back to Washington from a weekend in Florida.

Trump, 79, repeated his claim that he has “no idea” why doctors ordered the MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, scan or even what part of the body it was aimed at.

“It was just an MRI,” he said. “What part of the body? It wasn’t the brain because I took a cognitive test and I aced it.”

Even after the new disclosures, neither Trump nor the White House has ever fully explained why Trump went to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in October or why he needed the MRI in the first place.

Press secretary Karoline Leavitt claimed the visit amounted to a second “annual” physical for 2025.

The White House admitted last summer that Trump suffers from a relatively common condition called chronic venous insufficiency, or CVI, which it says causes the swollen ankles that have been noticed by reporters. The condition is not dangerous in itself but can be a sign of more serious heart problems, especially in a person of advanced age. Trump will turn 80 years old next June.

Trump’s communications team also claimed that bruising on Trump’s right hand, which aides often cover up with makeup when he appears in public, is likely caused by too much hand shaking and aspirin use.

Trump is the second oldest person to serve as president after former President Biden and will become the oldest ever if he serves to the end of his term in 2029.
