RFK Jr. impeachment articles filed by Michigan Democrat

A House Democrat filed articles of impeachment against Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Wednesday in a likely futile effort to oust the health and human services secretary.

Kennedy “has turned his back on science, on public health, and on the American people – spreading conspiracies and lies, driving up costs and putting lives at risk,” Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., said in a statement.

Democrats would face an uphill battle to impeach Kennedy in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. Democratic leaders, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, are not backing the impeachment push, according to the New York Times.

In her articles of impeachment, Stevens, who is running for Senate in Michigan, accused Kennedy of endangering public health and undermining important medical research.

During his term as Health and Human Services Secretary, Kennedy has gutted staff at the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control, including firing CDC leaders and members of the agency’s vaccine panel.

“His actions are reckless, his leadership is harmful, and his tenure has become a direct threat to our nation’s health and security,” Stevens said. “Congress cannot and will not stand by while one man dismantles decades of medical progress.”

Stevens has been a vocal critic of Kennedy throughout the year, introducing a bill to reverse funding cuts throughout his department and teasing the impeachment articles in September.

But while plenty of observers have called for Kennedy’s removal during the year, Stevens’ articles of impeachment are unlikely to move through the House. Kennedy is a close ally of President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress remain reluctant to break with the party’s leader.

Stevens’ impeachment push against Kennedy is likely to join several futile impeachment movements from recent years. Another Michigan Democrat, Shri Thanedar, filed similar articles against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Trump himself earlier this year.

During President Joe Biden’s term, Republicans filed impeachment articles against then-Vice President Kamala Harris, then-Attorney General Merrick Garland, former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Biden himself, all to no avail.
