NYC to get up to 4 inches of snowfall overnight

NEW YORK — New York City is poised for a wintry glow-up overnight, with several inches of snow forecast to fall across the five boroughs as Christmas draws ever near.

While Saturday started off unseasonably warm — with highs hitting the low 40s — temperatures are expected to dip just enough by late evening, setting the stage for a snowy scene across the city, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters said the precipitation will begin as a wet wintry mix, likely around 10 p.m., before becoming more light and powdery as it gets colder.

Up to 4 inches of snow could fall in total, with the steadiest amounts coming ahead of sunrise on Sunday before tapering off around 10 a.m.

Highs will likely hover in the 20s on Sunday and early into the week, meaning any snow that does fall over the weekend will likely stick around for a few days before a mid-week warm spell hits and melts it all away.

Similar snowfall is expected across much of New Jersey, as well as swaths of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Connecticut, meteorologist said. Long Island residents, meanwhile, could see up to 5 inches of the white stuff fall overnight.

The last measurable snow in NYC was on Feb. 20, 2025, wrapping another disappointing season for winter weather lovers. Last year, just more than a foot of snow accumulated throughout the entire season, topping 2023’s total, which measured just about 8 inches. And the year prior was even more meager, with totals barely topping 2 inches.

Ahead of the incoming storm, the city’s Emergency Management Department said it had activated its Winter Weather Emergency Plan.

“The winter season is in full swing, including all the winter weather that comes with it,” said Mayor Eric Adams. “All New York City agencies are prepared for this system, and we continue to monitor conditions closely. New Yorkers should all prepare too — avoid driving and give yourself extra travel time with public transit if you do need to travel, stay alert to changing conditions, and sign up for Notify NYC for real-time information updates.”

The National Weather Service offices in New York and New Jersey on Friday issued winter weather advisories, which are in effect from Saturday evening through early Sunday afternoon.
