What programs were at added at the University of South Carolina? Which were cut?
Published in News & Features
COLUMBIA, S.C. —The University of South Carolina in routinely evaluates its extensive program offerings, observing student demand and acting accordingly.
SC President Michael Amiridis told legislators in January that the school has both added and cut programs over the past several years.
“We pay attention to what is needed, what is needed at each institution and across the system,” Amiridis said at a January budget hearing.
As a whole, SC is down 10 programs overall in the last six years, with 44 program terminated and 34 programs added.
“Sometimes a program is not eliminated but is merged with another existing program to reduce duplication,” University spokesman Jeff Stensland said in a statement. “At the end of the day, our goal is to offer a wide array of degree programs from diverse fields — including the arts, sciences, and humanities — while ensuring we are responsive to the needs of our students and employers.”
The following programs were cut, consolidated or added at SC between 2019 and 2025, according to information provided by the University:

Undergraduate degrees in Chinese studies, classics, comparative literature, French, German, Russian and Spanish were combined into a single degree program, a bachelor’s degree in languages, literatures and cultures.
A proposal for a master’s degree in languages, literatures and cultures consolidated existing programs in comparative literature, French, German and Spanish.
Doctorate degrees in experimental psychology, clinical-community psychology and school psychology were also combined into a single offering.
SC once offered four different teaching masters of arts degrees in teaching English, mathematics, social studies and sciences, and another five in teaching sciences with concentrations in biology, chemistry, earth science, natural science and physics. Those were terminated to “eliminate inefficiency,” but masters of teaching degrees are still available.
Two separate master’s degree programs, experimental psychology and school psychology, where consolidated into a single offering.

The interdisciplinary bachelor’s degree in services management replaced the interdisciplinary degree in the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management.
A doctorate degree in nurse practice in the College of Nursing was previously one program with multiple concentrations. The concentrations were elevated to separate offerings focused on clinical expertise, executive healthcare leadership, family nursing and psychiatric mental health. This allowed for a smoother transition for graduates to pursue licensure and credentialing, and did not require additional university resources, according to information provided by the university.
