FRESNO, Calif. — A road connecting visitors to a popular Yosemite National Park vista is closing due to wildfire smoke.

Glacier Point Road will close at 6 p.m. on Thursday as a result of smoke from the Dome fire, park officials announced.

“This public safety closure is a result of reduced visibility along the road due to smoke and to safely allow firefighting operations,” Yosemite National Park officials said

The 16-mile roadway connects Wawona Road, a continuation of Highway 41 from Fresno, to Glacier Point.

“Smoky conditions are possible, with unhealthy air quality in some places at some times,” Yosemite National Park officials said.

Where is Dome fire burning in California?

As of Thursday, the Dome fire had burned a total of 3,795 acres in Mariposa County, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The fire burning north of Wawona Dome in Yosemite National Park was 15% contained, Cal Fire said.

So far, the Dome fire has claimed the lives of two firefighters, who died Sunday, Sept. 20, in a helicopter crash.

What’s closed in Yosemite National Park?

Park officials have closed several trails to travel and public use.

As of Monday, Sept. 21, the closure area runs from Wawona, north to the Badger Pass Ski Area and Glacier Point Road and from Wawona Road, an extension of Highway 41, east to Chinquapin, The Fresno Bee previously reported.

Park officials said several trails south of Glacier Point Road have also closed.

Four Mile Trail and Panorama Trail, which provide access to Glacier Point, remain open to hikers.

Glacier Point Road will reopen when conditions improve, according to InciWeb.

Backpackers parked overnight at Glacier Point before the closure will be permitted to exit.
