FORT WORTH, Texas — A McKinney teen has been arrested after allegedly planning to assassinate U.S. Rep. Keith Self and conduct a terrorist attack in North Texas on behalf of ISIS, federal officials said.
“I am grateful to the FBI and law enforcement for stopping this threat,” Self said on social media Wednesday. My family and I are safe, and I remain focused on serving the people of Texas’ 3rd District.”
The 17-year-old suspect remains in federal custody, according to Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV reporting. Sources told WFAA that the teen had been radicalized recently and federal agents had been monitoring his activity.
The suspect was arrested Oct. 5 after obtaining a firearm, WFAA reported. Authorities haven’t released the teen’s name or given a possible motive for his alleged plans.
Self pointed to his position on “preserving our constitutional republic from radical Islam” in his social media post.
“Our Founders believed this country was worth the sacrifice,” Self said in the post. “I served 25 years in the military because defending freedom was worth the sacrifice. This only strengthens my resolve. I will not back down.”
In December 2025, Self and U.S. Rep. Chip Roy formed the Sharia-Free American Caucus. In September, Self introduced a resolution denouncing Sharia law and opposing its implementation in the U.S.
A new mosque is planned for McKinney, which is part of Self’s district. The McKinney City Council unanimously voted to approve the site plan in August, saying the plan follows the city’s ordinances. Self spoke at the city council meeting and voiced his opposition of the project.
The Star-Telegram has reached out to the FBI for more information regarding the planned attack and the 17-year-old’s arrest.
