Selena Gomez has admitted she was "guilty" of being "very reactive" in past relationships.
The 32-year-old actress and singer - who is engaged to musician Benny Blanco - has reflected on her previous romances, and how she needed time to "collect" herself before finding love again.
Appearing on the 'On Purpose with Jay Shetty' podcast for a joint interview, she said: "I've been guilty though to start.
"I think for me, I necessarily felt like in other situations of mine I was very reactive.
"I think that's why I was alone for five years because I really needed to collect myself."
The 'Only Murders In The Building' star feels like she needed to mature before being in the right place to be with Benny.
She explained: "I think in the past, that's why I said to him all the time 10 years ago it's not that I wouldn't have wanted to be with you, I just wouldn't have been in the right headspace, and I don't think you deserved what I had gone through before.
"I've learned a lot of lessons and I've made mistakes and I just want this to be right. So for me, that was a lesson that I had to learn."
Selena - who has previously dated the likes of Nick Jonas and Justin Bieber - pointed out that Benny's patience has helped her change her mentality and not react to quickly to certain things.
She added: "I think girls can equally want to be right. For me, it was really difficult in the past and he's made it unbelievably easy so that if I even get to the point where I'm so frustrated, he's like very quick to understand."
The newly-engaged lovebirds are looking forward to getting married, but they recently admitted they aren't rushing into their big day, and 37-year-old musician Benny joked his bride-to-be Selena is constantly coming up with a whole new idea.
He told Rolling Stone magazine in a joint interview: "I think every day she's planned a new wedding in her head.
"We're very much 'take it one day at a time' type of people. We're still not over this moment.
"Literally, while you were talking, she was sitting there staring at her ring."
