Rian Johnson wants to return to 'Star Wars'.

The 51-year-old director helmed 2017's 'Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi' and has since moved over to making his murder mystery movies in the 'Knives Out' series, though Johnson has now revealed he hopes to revisit the galaxy far, far away in the future.

When The Independent asked the filmmaker how he would feel about making more 'Star Wars' pictures, he said: "I'm focused on making other stuff. But that wouldn't rule out it happening down the line.

"If I get back in the 'Star Wars' universe someday, I'd be the happiest person."

In 2017, it was announced Johnson would be helming his own 'Star Wars' trilogy, though there have been few updates about the project since.

Johnson is currently working on his third 'Knives Out' movie, 'Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery', which will see the return of Daniel Craig's detective Benoit Blanc to solve his most dangerous case yet.

Looking to the future, Johnson - who has helmed the 'Knives Out' series since its debut in 2019 - said he was open to continuing the franchise past 'Wake Up Dead Man', "as long as Daniel still wants to keep doing it".

When Collider asked the filmmaker whether there would be more 'Knives Out' movies, he said: "As long as Daniel still wants to keep doing it and as long as we have an idea that, to us, feels not just like cranking another one out, but feels genuinely exciting and scary like, 'Oh, wow, could we pull that off?'

"I love the genre. It's endlessly malleable, and so it holds endless possibilities. But at the same time, I have made three of them in a row. I don't feel burnt out on it at all, but the next thing I have in my head to write is an original that's not a mystery at all."

Johnson added that the mystery genre was "totally different" from others because it "encompasses so many other types of genres".

He explained: "It's a totally different genre. One of the things I love about the mystery genre is that it holds the whodunit. Like sci-fi, it encompasses so many other types of genres."

The director then teased 'Wake Up Dead Man' would be "so different" from 2022's 'Glass Onion'.

He said: "'Wake Up Dead Man', this next movie, is so different from, 'Glass Onion'. It's like night and day. And so, as long as we keep doing that, it's exciting."

'Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery' will star Daniel Craig, Josh Brolin, Jeremy Renner, Mila Kunis, Cailee Spaeny, Glenn Close and Andrew Scott, and is set to be released on Netflix at some point later this year.
