Television Q&A: Where was 'Untamed' filmed?

You have questions. I have some answers.

Q: We just finished the Netflix series "Untamed" and wonder if any of it was actually filmed in Yosemite (including the historic hotel) or was it filmed somewhere else? Can you solve this mystery?

A: The drama starring Eric Bana was set in Yosemite National Park, but was actually shot around Canada. “We couldn’t get the kind of access that we would’ve needed, particularly in summer, to Yosemite,” Bana told Town & Country. “So we stitched a lot of things together.”

By the way, a second season of “Untamed” has been ordered.

Q: Someone told me that there is going to be an American remake of the wonderful British series “Doc Martin.” Do you know anything about it?

A: Fox has announced plans for a new series, “Best Medicine,” based on the long-running “Doc Martin” series (2004-2022). In what Fox is calling a “charmingly complicated one-hour comedy,” Josh Charles (“The Good Wife”) stars as “Martin Best, a brilliant surgeon who abruptly leaves his illustrious career in Boston to become the general practitioner in a quaint East Coast fishing village where he spent summers as a child. Unfortunately, Martin’s blunt and borderline rude bedside manner rubs the quirky, needy locals the wrong way, and he quickly alienates the town, even though he's all they've got." Sound familiar, "Doc Martin" fans?

The series is not in Fox’s schedule for this fall but is part of the overall plan for the 2025-26 season.

Q: I'm seeing a lot of commercials with celebrities (Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Jimmy Fallon) in commercials for games played on the phone. Do commercials pay that well?

A: They can. Those ads you’ve seen for the Royal Kingdom game have reportedly paid big-name stars seven figures each, with LeBron James said to have made $4 million for his work. And you don’t have to be famous to accumulate commercial money if you become a recurring character. Stephanie Courtney, who plays Flo in the Progressive ads, is said to have collected millions since she appeared in her first ad for the company back in 2008.

Q: Do you "do" French TV? I remember a detective series from the 1960s (?); it was “noir”-ish but funny. The middle-aged and slightly frumpy detective played the sax and had an office cat and a gorgeous and smart secretary. Trying to recall the title. Hope you can help!

A: Mais oui! You are remembering the French series “Nestor Burma,” starring Guy Marchand and based on the series of novels by Leo Malet. It originally aired from 1991 to 2003.

Q: We have watched all of “Marco Polo” on Netflix and really enjoyed it. Are there plans for more?

A: No. The series ended in 2016. According to reports at the time, it did not draw enough of an audience or critical praise to justify its cost. (The Hollywood Reporter said Netflix lost $200 million on the project.)
