Hailee Steinfeld, Freida Pinto and Ron Perlman are among the cast of Asteroid.

Bourne Identity filmmaker Doug Liman is to premiere his immersive thriller at the Venice Film Festival next week and it has now been revealed that the short - which follows a group of strangers who risk it all by travelling to a nearby asteroid on an old record for a chance at vast wealth - will star the trio, as well as Rhenzy Feliz, Leon Mandel, and Pittsburgh Steelers DK Metcalf.

The film is among 30 works taking part in the festival's Immersive Competition, which is part of the wider Venice Immersive showcase, which runs from 27 August to 6 September.

Following its Venice premiere, Asteroid will launch later this year on Google's Android XR platform.

As well as Doug, his 30 Ninjas co-founders Julina Tatlock and Jed Weintrob have created the project, and are also named as producers along with Marty Schulman, Neil Parris and Jon Zepp.

The trio founded 30 Ninjas more than a decade ago, with the immersive story studio focused on creative groundbreaking immersive experiences by pushing the boundaries of technology.

The Road House director previously revealed his first ambition was to make "big, mindless entertainment" but when he eventually got to do that, he realised he was more interested in characters than anything else.

He told Empire magazine: "I always wanted to make action movies since I was a kid.

"I remember watching the first Superman up on a big screen in Times Square when I was probably six or something. I was like, 'I want to make movies like that.'

"But you don't get to start making movies like that so I made Swingers and thought it was going to be a resume film for me. I never even thought anyone would see it, and it became a little indie darling.

"It opened more doors for me and then I made Go, but that was still a little indie movie.

"But I had gotten the rights to the Bourne Identity book after Swingers and I'd shopped it around because people were like, 'Love Swingers, what do you want to do next?' I was like, 'I want to do The Bourne Identity'. And Universal said OK.

"As a young filmmaker, I wanted to make big, mindless entertainment. And when I started making The Bourne Identity, I realised that I'm actually interested in the characters.

"I never would have thought that. I'm not interested in just making a dumb spy movie."
