Why this North Texas city is important to 'Yellowstone' spinoff star Ed Harris

FORT WORTH, Texas — While on break from filming the new “Yellowstone” spinoff, Ed Harris visited a North Texas city near and dear to his heart.

Just over a month ago, Harris, 74, was cast in the Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler-led spinoff series tentatively titled “The Dutton Ranch.” Harris is slated to play a weathered veteran and veterinarian in the show that has been filming around the Metroplex since mid-August.

Over the weekend, Harris visited Waxahachie, about 40 miles southeast of Fort Worth.

While there, he saw the sights and reminisced about filming a movie in the city over four decades ago. Here’s what to know.

Ed Harris visits Waxahachie, Texas

On Oct. 10, Harris stopped by the Ellis County Museum in downtown Waxahachie.

In a Facebook post, the museum said Harris was there to visit the museum’s “Hollywood Comes to Ellis County” exhibit, which features his 1984 film “Places in the Heart.”

The 1930s-set family drama takes place in Waxahachie and follows a widow as she “tries to save her small 40-acre farm with the help of a blind boarder and an itinerant black handyman.” The Oscar-winning film was filmed in Waxahachie and around Ellis County in 1983.

While in town filming, Harris married his “Places in the Heart” co-star Amy Madigan at the Ellis County Courthouse. The Ellis County Museum is just a stone’s throw from the courthouse.

Harris was also spotted just down the road at Gingerbread Antiques.

In a Facebook post, the shop wrote that Harris stopped in to browse and took photos with the staff.

More on ‘The Dutton Ranch’

The spinoff series is set after “Yellowstone” Season 5 and follows the continuing adventures of Beth and Rip.

“The Dutton Ranch, home to Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), is a testament to the peace they sought, fought for, and nearly died for, as they’ve come to cherish their 7,000-acre land. With tough times and stiff competition, Beth and Rip do what they must to survive, all while ensuring Carter (Finn Little) becomes the man he’s supposed to be,” the show’s logline reads.

Word first broke on the show in mid-August under the then working title of “Rio Palo.”

The city of Ferris announced that the show would be filming in its small town of nearly 3,000. About a week later, 101 Studios CEO David Glasser confirmed to the Star-Telegram that “Rio Palo” was merely a temporary name for the show.

On Aug. 21, Ferris officials confirmed the spinoff is actually the Beth and Rip-led spinoff that was announced shortly after “Yellowstone” Season 5 concluded late last year. Deadline reported a few days later that the spinoff has a new working title: “The Dutton Ranch.”

In addition to Harris, “The Dutton Ranch” stars Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, Finn Little, Annette Bening and Jai Courtney. The show has filmed in Boyd, Cleburne, Rio Vista, Fort Worth and Mineral Wells, thus far.

Paramount has yet to announce a premiere date for the show, although it will likely release sometime in 2026.
