Labubu, the elfish, snaggle-toothed plush toy revered by legions of frenzied fans worldwide, is going to Hollywood to star in a movie crafted by A-list talent, parent company Pop Mart announced Thursday.
The company has teamed up with Sony Pictures Entertainment, which acquired the rights in November, to deliver a “live‑action and CGI hybrid bringing Labubu's whimsical world to the big screen,” the companies announced in Paris, the current stop on a worldwide 10-year anniversary tour for the Labubu-led character line known as the Monsters.
Paul King of “Paddington” and “Wonka” fame is already attached to direct and produce the “live‑action and CGI hybrid,” Pop Mart and Sony said. He’ll team with screenwriter Steven Levenson, known for penning the Tony Award-winning “Dear Evan Hansen” and the Lin-Manuel Miranda-directed movie “Tick, Tick… Boom!” to co-write the project. The creator of Labubu and the Monsters characters, Kasing Lung, will be the executive producer.
Lung, 53, was born in Hong Kong and grew up mostly in the Netherlands, where he became enamored with the Nordic folklore that would later inspire his characters. Their first incarnation was in a 2015 picture-book series he wrote and illustrated, “The Monsters Trilogy.” He turned them into toys with the help of Hong Kong figurine maker How2Work.
In 2019 he began working with Beijing-based toy manufacturer and collectibles purveyor Pop Mart, converting them into plush toys, and a global phenomenon was born. Demand swelled, then took off when celebrities caught on. By 2025, crowds were lining up, sometimes overnight, to snag the “small monster with high, pointed ears and serrated teeth,” as Pop Mart describes the “ugly-cute” character on its website. “Despite a mischievous look, Labubu is kindhearted and always wants to help, but often accidentally achieves the opposite.”
That could indeed make for some fun storytelling, and the companies said Thursday they are here for it, with plans to give fans “a unique cinematic experience with creative storytelling, artistic vision and enduring global appeal.”
