Queen Elizabeth will be the focus of a new BBC One documentary marking what would have been her 100th birthday. Charting a century of change through her life and reign, the late monarch - who died aged 96 in September, 2022 - is set to be honoured in Queen Elizabeth II: Her Story, Our Century, a one-hour film examining the social, cultural and historical shifts that unfolded during her time on the throne.
The programme will explore her role as Britain's longest-reigning monarch and the way her life intersected with major national and global events, from the age of Empire through to the rise of celebrity culture.
The documentary will combine archive footage with new interviews, featuring contributors including Helen Mirren, Barack Obama, David Attenborough, Sheila Hancock and Queen Camilla.
The BBC said the film aims to reflect both the monarch's personal journey and the broader transformation of modern Britain.
In its official synopsis, the corporation said: "Spanning an era that saw the nation move from the age of Empire to the rise of celebrity culture - from the Blitz to the 2012 London Olympics - Queen Elizabeth II lived through extraordinary change. "More than a witness to history, she became an enduring symbol of continuity in a rapidly evolving world. Through the prism of her life, the documentary tells the story of modern Britain in a richly historical and emotionally resonant exploration of both The Queen and the people she served."
Catherine Catton, head of factual entertainment and events at the BBC, said: "Queen Elizabeth II: Her Story, Our Century explores the life of her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II through the lens of a century of change and offers an important reflection on how modern Britain has been shaped."
The documentary will draw on what the BBC described as "powerful archive" material, alongside newly recorded interviews with public figures from across cultural and political life.
The programme forms part of commemorations around what would have been the monarch's centenary, placing her experiences within the wider narrative of a changing nation.
The BBC has not yet confirmed a broadcast date for the film, which is set to be a must-watch for royal fans.
