CHICAGO — New year, next album. Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy on Tuesday announced a 2027 North American tour celebrating the 40th anniversary of R.E.M.’s album “Document.”

The tour is slated to begin in Denver in early February and come to Chicago’s Salt Shed on March 13 — currently just the single show announced for Shannon and Narducy’s hometown. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday at concertedefforts.com.

Shannon, probably still better known as the Hollywood actor who got his start at A Red Orchid Theatre in Old Town, and Narducy, a guitarist from Evanston, have been famously covering R.E.M.’s albums on the 40th anniversary of their releases since the anniversary of “Murmur” in 2024 — first as a one-off show at Metro, then a tour. That went over so well, it was followed by a 2025 tour with a backing band celebrating R.E.M.’s 1985 album “Fables of the Reconstruction,” and then last year a tour playing 1986’s “Lifes Rich Pageant” in its entirety, with stops at the Metro and Riviera Theatre.

When they played in R.E.M.’s hometown of Athens, Georgia, on the first tour, they were joined on stage by singer Michael Stipe, drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck and bassist Mike Mills in R.E.M.’s first reunion in 13 years, with similar mini-reunions and reappearances by band members since.
