It's the first day of the year in which all planets are flying straight. No motion is inherently better or worse than another. Forward, backward and sideways are all part of the dance. But as creatures living in a realm where time is an arrow that only flies in one direction, a linear path is often more comfortable, better understood and more conducive to progressing independent interests.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). The value of curiosity isn't lost on you. Because you continually seek novel insights and better understandings, there's no end to the number of fresh faces who drift through your experience, each a world unto themselves.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). According to shared consumption experiences, changing a single ingredient of a recipe can change the whole dish, and a single individual can significantly alter group social dynamics. This is why who you invite and where you sit matters.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). What starts as an act of love can sometimes turn into a routine or obligation. Routines take little energy, but obligations are a drain. To rekindle that initial spark, step away. Break the pattern to ignite something energizing and new.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). Ambition is admirable, but pushing too hard can backfire. When you overdo it, the recovery can be so brutal that you wish you'd never made the effort in the first place. The key is pacing -- move forward incrementally so that the challenge stays a pleasure, not a punishment.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Inside you, a shy child and a bold explorer coexist. One navigates with the caution that has preserved our species for millennia, and the other with the verve that has propelled it forward. However you show up, it's exactly right.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You'll stumble upon the perfect challenge -- one that's engaging, new and just the right level of difficulty. Before long, you'll find your groove, losing yourself in total flow as you dive into the task at hand.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). There are times to ask why, but they are few and far between, and this isn't one of them. The questions most worth posing are the ones aimed at practical and actionable answers: where, who, when, etc.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). When working through challenges, you don't want social media likes; you want your support in person and in real time. Let people know this is what you need, and they'll be there for you.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Policing the actions of others is a big job -- that's why law enforcement is a paid position. But for today, you have plenty on your own plate to tend to. If you're not on a payroll for monitoring others, there's little reason to appoint yourself to that task.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Every connection you make changes you in some way. Joys and challenges will shift your course in ways you can't predict. You'll move with it, gracefully, like you do. Sometimes you shape them, and sometimes they shape you.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Though there may be no obvious events to celebrate today, the small victories abound, and you should make a bigger deal than seems necessary. Be "extra." If you don't make these moments special, who will?

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). The thing that bothers you is also your greatest opportunity for growth. The more it disturbs you, the bigger the potential for transformation. Your mindset keeps getting better. You're primed to work through irritations, release resistance, tackle challenges and see your capabilities expand.

TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (April 13). It will be a year branded by passion. You break the chains and become your fiercest self. The heat and intensity of your approach make change happen fast. More highlights: in your personal/domestic life, all things old will be new again: You've a skill for reinvention, a vision for renovation and a joyful embrace of reunion. Libra and Scorpio adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 5, 12, 10, 30 and 2.

CELEBRITY PROFILES: It's rumored that the third president of the United States and Founding Father Thomas Jefferson had an astrologer. Though no conclusive evidence has surfaced, Jefferson did mention astronomical discoveries in various pieces of correspondence, suggesting he was interested in cosmic events. Jefferson, who sent Lewis and Clark on their westward expedition, was a bold Aries born when the moon was in Sagittarius, the sign of exploration and expansion.
