Same Camera, New Lens

Holiday Mathis on

Mercury transiting the early degrees of Sagittarius changes out the lens on the cosmic camera. Are we seeing reality, or are we seeing what we wish it would be? To have big needs and wants tends to color everything. What would we see if we weren't focused on a particular outcome? What would we ask if we were curious instead of certain?

ARIES (March 21-April 19). The dance you do when you wonder if something is good enough to share? That's self-curation. It's protective (because you've learned certain people can be unpredictable), but it's also a craft in itself. It forces you to polish your work.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Money is just math until you touch it. Then it becomes emotion. Today you'll notice the feeling more than the number. Whether what comes up is envy, pride, relief, fear or other, follow the sensation and you'll learn what you really value.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Momentum works the same in physics as it does in life: Once you start moving, it's easier to keep going. Each decision clears uncertainty and makes the next choice simpler, until suddenly you've built speed in a direction.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). If what you see looks stark and ugly, don't believe it. Reality can warp like a bad mirror in a discount dressing room, exaggerating flaws. Step back, soften your gaze, and remember: The reflection is not the truth.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Of course action takes energy, but it will actually take a lot less energy than talking about action. Whether you're listening or speaking, too many words overexplaining or overcommunicating drain you. Brevity helps you maintain strong energy levels.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Someone else's needs clash with your own. There's no way to do your thing and their thing at the same time. Who should go first? The first position won't be advantageous to you; invite others to lead the way.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Don't let shopping or spending be the starting point. You don't need to buy anything new to make progress. You already have enough of the main ingredient to get going, which is energy. Apply your vitality to different approaches and plans.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). It doesn't take much courage to trade what isn't working for what might work. But you have to be pretty brave and optimistic to trade good ideas for better ones, trusting that the upgrade is worth the risk.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Letting people's opinions and remarks slide instead of obsessing. Keeping your schedule light. Doing just enough to move forward without straining. Taking breaks, floating from task to task, refusing to let life grind you down... you're living with agility and freedom.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Three roles beckon: critic, competitor, solver. The first two are crowded fields. The third is wide open. You'll spot the fix that makes everything work better, and suddenly, you're indispensable.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). On a basic human level, all are equal, but there are better and worse fits for your life at this time. So say yes to the friend who makes you laugh and no to the one who leaves you exhausted.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Is there such a thing as a purely objective reality? If it did exist, would a human be capable of perceiving it? Let the philosophers argue endlessly while your empathy allows you to inch a little closer to a shared experience of life.

TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Oct. 30). Welcome to your Year of the Spark. You'll ignite projects, passions and hearts. Work accelerates once you stop waiting for permission and just go. Love responds to courage and playful risk. More highlights: You'll launch a creative pursuit that puts your name out there. A big purchase turns into a big return. Your family celebrates you in a new way. Capricorn and Gemini adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 8, 30, 12, 44 and 15.

CELEBRITY PROFILES: On the surface, Henry Winkler is warm, affable and funny, but like a Scorpio, there's much beneath -- like emotional depth, resilience and a willingness to grapple with hard things (like his lifelong struggle with dyslexia). Winkler recently released his 40th children's book, "Detective Duck: The Mystery at Emerald Pond," a writing project anchored in his continuing passion for making reading accessible to all. Scorpio is often associated with hidden strength, emotional transformation and a capacity to reinvent.
