Is it true that we can be blessed because of what others did in the past?

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: Is it true that we can be blessed because of what others did in the past, suffering hardship, yet we benefit for the good? And if true, what are some examples? – H.B.

A: We have been blessed through the endurance and faithfulness of those who have suffered in the past. Likewise, future generations may be blessed through our trials and suffering – how we react to them and the testimony we leave behind.

Consider the many stories in Scripture. After suffering from others’ lies and persecution, even from his own family, Joseph was used by the Lord to bring healing to his wicked brothers and provide forgiveness, protection and comfort to them.

And no one has ever gone before us like the Lord Jesus Christ, who is from the beginning of time. Jesus declared, “Before Abraham was, I AM” (John 8:58, NKJV). Yet, He humbled Himself and came down from Heaven to Earth to show us the love of God the Father and bring salvation to all who will receive Him.

The world around us promotes lifestyles opposite of what God wants to give us. Through advertising, the media and entertainment, society is told to “live for yourself; have a good time, indulge your senses, pursue every pleasure, and strive for success. And if you do,” these voices add, “then you’ll be happy and blessed.”

But God calls us to another way – His way. Blessing, He says, comes only from following Him. Every other way promises what it cannot deliver – and delivers exactly the opposite of what it promises, leaving people restless and spiritually empty.

Yes, a life of blessing is ours today when we make Christ the center of our lives and live according to His Word. Only to those who have confessed Jesus is God and received Him as Savior and Lord, can He bestow the hope of Heaven and the benefits of eternal life.
