Randy Villegas prevails in California's 22nd District, giving Democrats a sought-after gain

Randy Villegas has captured the seat representing Congressional District 22 in California’s Central Valley, giving Democrats a much-sought-after pickup, according to The Associated Press.
Villegas was appointed to the Visalia Unified School District board in 2021 and won election in 2022 and 2024. He teaches political science at College of the Sequoias and grew up in Kern County.
The needs of working families, particularly healthcare and cost of living, were at the forefront of Villegas’ congressional campaign.
Villegas’ defeat of Rep. David Valadao, a Hanford Republican, was celebrated by Democrats who had previously attempted to flip the seat, which has long been considered one of the most competitive in the country.
The Cook Political Report listed the Central Valley seat — representing portions of Kern, Fresno, Kings and Tulare counties — as a toss up.
Valadao had persevered in past attempts to oust him from the seat, but he faced new challenges this year, including redistricting that made him even more vulnerable to his Democratic opponent.
