Ben Rice swatted a 3-1 offering from Athletics reliever Mitch Spence deep into the right field stands to extend the New York Yankees’ lead in the 5th inning as the Bombers cruised to a 12-2 win, taking the series from the nomadic franchise to boot.

Rice was also plunked twice.

Aaron Judge clubbed four hits on the day to bring his batting average back up to .409 as the Yankees tormented former teammate Luis Severino (1-4), who was tagged for nine hits and eight runs in his first-ever start against his ex-club. He was chased from the game in the fifth without recording an out shortly before Rice’s blast.

Judge’s two-run single in the second raised his RBI total to 39.

Paul Goldschmidt added two RBIs of his own on a trio of doubles.

The Yankees racked up 15 hits.

Ryan Yarbrough (1-0) went five innings, allowing two runs and scattering six hits before Yerry De los Santos (3 IP) and Tyler Matzek shut the A’s out over the final four frames. Yarbrough now has a 3.70 ERA across 24 1/3 innings.

The Yankees (23-17) will continue their west coast trip with a stop in Seattle where Clarke Schmidt will kick-off a three-game series starting Monday night. Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s starters have not been announced.
