Tyrese Maxey not selected as All-Star reserve, Sixers shut out of NBA showcase

PHILADELPHIA — The 76ers won’t have an NBA All-Star for the first time in eight seasons.
Joel Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey were not among the players named as Eastern Conference All-Star reserves Thursday on TNT’s NBA Tip-Off show.
At the beginning of the season, all three were expected to play in the league’s showcase. But perennial All-Stars Embiid and George were excluded partially because of injuries. George also has been inconsistent in his first season with the Sixers (19-27). Meanwhile, Maxey’s exclusion could be viewed as a snub. After struggling from the field early on, the point guard has been one of the league’s hottest players.
Entering Thursday’s games, Maxey was sixth in the league in scoring (27.1 points per game) and third in steals (1.9). He scored 30 points in Wednesday’s victory over the Sacramento Kings to extend his career-best streak of 28-plus points to 12 consecutive games. He has averaged 34.7 points on 53.4% shooting and 6.0 assists in his last three games.
Embiid has played in just 13 games this season, snapping his seven-year run as an All-Star starter. The 2023 NBA MVP and two-time scoring champion hasn’t played since Jan. 4. His averages of 24.4 points and 7.9 rebounds also are below his career marks of 27.8 points and 11.1 rebounds.
George is averaging 17.1 points, which rates as the fourth-lowest output of his career, and shooting 42.9% from the field. The nine-time All-Star is also averaging 5.6 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 1.7 steals while playing in just 30 of 46 games.
The All-Star Game will be played on Feb. 16 in San Francisco. The NBA will implement a new four-team tournament for this year’s All-Star Game at the Chase Center.
Milwaukee Bucks power forward Giannis Antetokounmpo (East) and Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokić (West) led the 10 All-Star starters chosen in voting by fans, players and a panel of reporters. The fans accounted for 50% of the voting, with media members and players accounting for 25% each.
The East starters, who were announced Jan. 23, are Antetokounmpo, Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum, Cleveland Cavaliers shooting Donovan Mitchell, New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns and point guard Jalen Brunson.
Jaylen Brown (Celtics), Cade Cunningham (Detroit Pistons), Darius Garland (Cavaliers), Damian Lillard (Bucks), Evan Mobley (Cavaliers), Pascal Siakam (Indiana Pacers) and Tyler Herro (Miami Heat) were the Eastern Conference reserves.
For the West, the starters are Jokić, Golden State Warriors point guard Steph Curry, Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant and Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James.
Anthony Davis (Lakers), Anthony Edwards (Minnesota Timberwolves), Victor Wembanyama (San Antonio Spurs), Alperen Şengün (Houston Rockets), Jalen Williams (Thunder), Jaren Jackson Jr. (Memphis Grizzlies) and former Sixer James Harden (Los Angeles Clippers) were the West reserves.
