Magic wrap up regular season with loss at Hawks
Published in Basketball
The Orlando Magic and Atlanta Hawks will meet Tuesday night at Kia Center with a lot at stake in the Nos. 7-8 matchup of the NBA Play-In Tournament.
But first, they had to wrap up the regular season Sunday at State Farm Arena in a contest that wouldn’t impact the postseason standings in the East.
Neither side played majority of their starters and the Hawks captured the victory, 117-105, over Orlando in Atlanta.
The Magic were without Paolo Banchero (right knee soreness), Franz Wagner (right ankle soreness) and Cory Joseph (left knee soreness), while the Hawks didn’t play Trae Young (right Achilles tendinitis injury management), Dyson Daniels (rest), Onyeka Okongwu (left knee injury management), Caris LeVert (right knee injury management) and Georges Niang (rest).
Those players will return to the court Tuesday when the No. 7 Magic (41-41) host the No. 8 Hawks (40-42) for a chance at the 7-seed in the playoffs.
The loser will host the winner of Nos. 9-10 game between the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat in an elimination next Friday.
Starting 5
The Magic had a couple of more regulars available Sunday than they did Friday at Indiana.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (left knee strain) and Wendell Carter Jr. (right hip contusion) were upgraded from questionable at pregame and opened alongside Jonathan Isaac, Tristan da Silva and Anthony Black.
Caldwell-Pope only played five first-quarter minutes when he missed all three of his 3-point shots. He added a steal and a rebound in limited action.
Isaac did a little bit of everything. The Magic forward racked up his second double-double of the season by way of 12 points and 10 rebounds alongside three blocks.
Carter was the lone regular starter to see the court in the second half. The Magic center shot 1 of 7 from the field with four points and three rebounds.
Black notched a double-double as well with a team-high 20 points and 10 boards.
History made
By not playing Sunday, Banchero and Wagner locked up their regular season averages, which included their high-scoring marks of 25.9 points and 24.2 points respectively.
They became the first pair of Magic teammates to both average 20-plus points in a single season since Shaquille O’Neal and Penny Hardaway in 1995-96, and are just the second duo in franchise history.
O’Neal and Hardaway did it twice in ’94-95 (O’Neal, 29.3 points; Hardaway 20.9 points) and ’95-96 (O’Neal, 26.6 points; Hardaway, 21.7 points).
Rookie watch
Da Silva made the 38th start of his rookie campaign when he totaled 14 points with three triples.
The No. 18 pick added seven rebounds and six assists in 37 minutes.
