ST. LOUIS — St. Louis University showed its ability to put a bad game behind it, quite decisively, as the 21st-ranked Billikens took charge early and held the lead throughout as they won their 15th game in a row, beating Dayton, 102-71, before a sellout crowd, dressed mostly in white, at Chaifetz Arena on Friday night.
After having to battle back from 15 points down against George Washington on Tuesday to pull out a win in the closing seconds, SLU never trailed against Dayton and never led by less than 10 after the first eight minutes of the game. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for SLU against Dayton, improved it to 9-0 at the halfway point of the Atlantic 10 season, and a whopping 21-1 overall.
Trey Green had 23 points for the second game in a row, matching once again his career high, and also had five rebounds and four assists in 27 minutes. Quentin Jones had 18 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals, Ishan Sharma had 13 and Dion Brown had 13. Dayton, meanwhile, has lost four in a row, dropping to 14-8 overall, 5-4 in the A-10. It was SLU’s biggest win over Dayton in an A-10 game, and their biggest win against the Flyers since a 34-point win in 1994.
Dayton had one brief flicker of pulse, cutting SLU’s lead to 51-41 early in the second half, but a 12-0 run for SLU quickly moved the game to safety. SLU went onto lead by as many as 35 points and Jax Kerr got the Billikens to 100 points for the second time in A-10 play with 51.2 seconds left. SLU shot 60.7 on 3’s in the game, making 17 of 28.
SLU jumped out to a quick 11-3 lead and kept on going, as Green sank a series of 3-pointers. A 12-2 run for SLU put the Billikens up 27-11 and forced Dayton to call time with 11:41 to play. SLU opened up a 24-point lead at 42-18 with 4:02 to go, and then became its own worst enemy, turning the ball over on four of its next five possessions. That allowed Dayton to cut SLU’s lead at the half to 46-29.
Green made 4 of 5 3-pointers in the first half and had 14 points, while Jones had 12 points, going 5 for 5 at the free-throw line. SLU had 11 turnovers in the first half, but Dayton was able to get only six points off of them, while SLU had 11 points off Dayton’s nine turnovers. SLU shot 63% from the field and 63.6% on 3-point tries in the first half.
