Kings guard Zach LaVine set to undergo season-ending surgery

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A tumultuous season has come to a premature end for Sacramento Kings guard Zach LaVine.
A league source told The Sacramento Bee on Friday that LaVine plans to undergo season-ending surgery on his right hand following the All-Star break, as first reported by NBA insider Chris Haynes.
LaVine missed the past three games with an injury that was initially described as right pinky soreness. The Kings described it as a tendon injury going into Wednesday’s game against the Utah Jazz.
The Kings (12-44) have amassed the worst record in the NBA this season with LaVine and other key players floating in and out of the lineup due to injuries. They have lost 14 consecutive games going into the All-Star break, tying the 1960 and 1972 Cincinnati Royals for the longest losing streak in franchise history.
Lavine, 30, appeared in 39 games this season. The 6-foot-5 shooting guard averaged 19.2 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists while shooting 47.9% from the field and 39% from 3-point range. LaVine, a two-time All-Star, has missed 17 games due to various injuries, including lower back soreness, a right thigh contusion, right thumb soreness and a left ankle sprain.
Kings coach Doug Christie has deployed 29 different starting lineups this season. Domantas Sabonis and Keegan Murray have both missed 37 games and have yet to play together this season.
The Kings acquired LaVine one year ago in a three-team trade that sent De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs. He averaged 23.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.2 assists while shooting a career-high 44.6% from 3-point range last season, but his numbers have dropped considerably this season.
LaVine scored 30 points or more in five of Sacramento’s first six games and poured in a season-high 42 points against the Miami Heat on Dec. 6, but he has been plagued by injuries and inconsistency. In November, LaVine had an altercation with a Kings season ticket holder who shouted angrily at him during a timeout, criticizing his effort and defense in a viral video moment.
LaVine is in the fourth year of a five-year, $215.2 million contract. He is earning $47.5 million this season with a $49 million player option for next season.
