Tyrese Maxey injures finger in 76ers' loss at Hawks, will undergo further testing Sunday

ATLANTA — Things may have gone from bad to worse for the Philadelphia 76ers, after All-Star point guard Tyrese Maxey left in the final seconds of Saturday’s 125-116 loss at the Atlanta Hawks with a finger injury on his right hand.
Sixers head coach Nick Nurse said during his postgame news conference that Maxey was set to get an X-ray. The Philadelphia Inquirer later learned that Maxey will undergo additional testing on Sunday.
“You don’t want any of that stuff to happen,” Nurse said of Maxey’s injury. “Guys do get hit on the hands quite a bit and jam fingers and all kinds of stuff, so let’s hope that’s what it is.”
After colliding with teammate Adem Bona while going for a loose ball, Maxey hit the floor and rolled his body out of the way of the play and stayed down in obvious pain. Maxey then walked off the court and straight to the locker room with his hand tucked in his jersey.
Maxey chose not to speak to the media following Saturday’s game, but was in the locker room during most of the open period. He confirmed he was in good spirits when Trendon Watford, Maxey’s teammate and close friend, hollered the question at him during an interview. Maxey also was using both hands to eat a Chick-fil-A sandwich and type on his cellphone.
Maxey is one of the NBA’s premier scorers and workhorses, entering Saturday averaging 28.9 points, 6.7 assists and 4.2 rebounds while leading the league in minutes played (38.3 per game).
Any extended absence would be a significant blow to an already short-handed Sixers team. Former NBA Most Valuable Player Joel Embiid is out at least another week with an oblique injury, while Paul George is serving a suspension for violating the NBA’s anti-drug policy. Standout rookie VJ Edgecombe has also missed the past two games with a back bruise.
“We’ll see,” Nurse said. “Won’t make any judgments or think about [Maxey being out] until we find out for sure.”
Saturday’s loss in Atlanta dropped the Sixers (34-29) from sixth to eighth place in the Eastern Conference standings. They next play at the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday.
