HARTFORD, Conn. — UConn announced Friday afternoon that it signed two-time national champion men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley to a two-year contract extension through the 2031-32 season.

The terms will align with the contract Hurley signed in 2024, a six-year deal valued at $50 million with additional performance-based incentives, after leading the Huskies to back-to-back national championships and turning down an offer to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. That agreement made him Connecticut’s highest-paid state employee and the second-highest paid coach in college basketball behind Kansas’ Bill Self, according to the USA Today database, which doesn’t include all private schools.

“Dan has proven to be the very best coach in men’s college basketball, and we’re thrilled to keep him home at UConn for the next six years. His teams embody everything that UConn is about; resilience, competitive excellence and the pursuit of championships. In this chaotic era of college sports, it has never been more important to maintain continuity as we strive to compete at the highest level in everything we do,” UConn Director of Athletics David Benedict said in a release.

The news was first reported by Jon Rothstein for 247Sports.

After making a third appearance in the title game in four years, Hurley and his staff put together a roster with 10 new additions that was ranked No. 4 in the preseason AP poll and No. 1 in the Big East by the league’s coaches.

“It’s an incredible honor to coach the game I love at a place like the University of Connecticut and to be part of a community that means so much to me and my family,” Hurley said in a release ahead of his ninth season at UConn. “We understand our responsibility to the people of Connecticut and to the incredible supporters of UConn Basketball and will continue to bring a relentless, obsessive approach to winning and championship-level success. UConn is the Basketball Capital of the World, Bleed Blue!”

The Huskies are set to begin one of the toughest nonconference schedules in the nation next week, with a rematch of the championship game against Michigan coming up at TD Garden on Friday night. UConn will play all of last year’s Final Four participants, including Illinois and Arizona, as well as Duke, Kansas, Virginia and Ohio State before getting into the league slate.

UConn has compiled a 126-28 record since the 2022-23 season, when Hurley found the championship formula after consecutive first-round exits in the NCAA Tournament. The program has sent 12 players to the NBA in his tenure, including seven first-round picks and four lottery selections.

Hurley, turning 54 in January, has a career record of 350-180 over 16 years as a college head coach, the last eight in Storrs, where his teams have gone a combined 199-75. He is 20-6 in the NCAA Tournament and 11-1 in the Sweet 16 or later.

The 2026-27 season begins with Gardner-Webb at 9 p.m. Monday, as part of a double-header in Hartford’s PeoplesBank Arena with the UConn women tipping off at 5 p.m. against Cornell.
