NEW YORK — On the second day of training camp, Jets quarterback Justin Fields was carted off the field with what coach Aaron Glenn later revealed was a toe injury.

“Justin went down with a toe [injury] on the side of his foot,” Glenn said. “Listen, I don’t know the severity of the injury, but I do know it’s a toe on his right side.”

While Glenn didn’t know the severity of Fields’ injury at the time he spoke to the media, sources told the New York Daily News the QB suffered a dislocated toe. The NFL Network first reported the nature of the injury.

“We have an outstanding backup in Tyrod [Taylor], who has been in this league around 14 years,” Glenn added. “So, the leadership that he brings, listen, we’re all good, we’re all good.”

Obviously, a dislocated toe is better than what was first believed to be a worst-case scenario of a lower-leg injury, but Fields’ recovery time is unclear. Dislocated toes typically require several weeks to heal, with a potential recovery time of three to six weeks, depending on the severity of the injury.

During 11-on-11 drills, Fields limped after throwing an incomplete pass to tight end Jeremy Ruckert. After the pass, Fields went down and sat on the ground briefly before limping off with assistance from a trainer.

“When anybody goes down, there’s a lump in my throat,” Glenn said. “Listen, I hate injuries for any player, but I want to understand exactly what the injury is before I move forward with my thought process.

“I went through a situation last year in Detroit where Hutch [Aidan Hutchinson] goes down, [Alex] Anzalone goes down, Alim McNeill goes down. Man, you keep playing football and that’s just what it is. We are going to keep moving, no matter what the situation is, no matter what happens with any player that gets hurt, we gotta keep moving.”

Glenn said he assumed another player stepped on Fields’ toe during the play, but told reporters he would have to look at the film to know exactly what happened. The Jets’ training staff checked him out in their medical area off to the side after Fields limped off the field gingerly.

Following Fields’ injury, Taylor delivered a message to the players after he got into the huddle.

“He brought us up,” Jets wide receiver Josh Reynolds said. “It was more of, we gotta pick it up. It was one of those vet things where … it was good for him to do that after kind of what happened.”

Fields was then carted off and sat in the passenger seat of the cart before he was taken to the locker room for further evaluation. He walked into the Jets’ facility under his own power. The Jets briefly stopped team drills after he was carted off.

“Truthfully, I didn’t know he went down at first,” Jets guard Alijah Vera-Tucker said following practice. “I saw Tyrod come in and lead us like the leader that he is.”

After releasing Aaron Rodgers in March, the Jets signed Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract to be their unquestioned starting quarterback. The hope is that Fields could be the long-term solution at quarterback for the Jets and revitalize his career after failed stints with the Bears and Steelers.

If Fields is out for an extended period, it would be devastating to the Jets’ offense in their first season under Glenn. The good news is Taylor has started 58 games throughout his 14-year career with the Bills, Giants, Chargers, Texans and Browns. Brady Cook and Adrian Martinez are the other Jets quarterbacks on the roster.

“I think the most important part is if anything does happen to Justin, I don’t think there’s any drop-off in terms of what we want to do when it comes to playcall,” Glenn said about Taylor. “Very similar when it comes to skill set. That was enticing for us.

“The leadership ability, the things that we’ve heard about him. I played against him before and you can tell the players really gravitate to him. When he says something, everybody really listens — even the coaching staff.

“He has been around this league for a long time, he knows what it takes to win and he’s a really good person and we are excited to have that guy here.”
