Blues run point streak to four games in 7-2 rout of Kraken

ST. LOUIS — Maybe the Blues are speaking to Doug Armstrong.
The Blues GM has long said that the players will tell him what to do at the upcoming trade deadline. With a 7-2 win over the Kraken on Tuesday night, the Blues now have five of a possible six points since returning from the 4 Nations break and head to Washington looking for their first three-game win streak of the season.
Oskar Sundqvist and Cam Fowler each had one goal and two assists for three-point nights, and it was the first career three-point game for Sundqvist. Zack Bolduc scored twice, also supported by goals from Jordan Kyrou, Robert Thomas and Jake Neighbours.
Nick Leddy's apparent goal in the third period was wiped off the board due to goaltender interference by Alexey Toropchenko.
Former Blues Vince Dunn and Jaden Schwartz spoiled the shutout by scoring for the Kraken in the third period.
The Blues (27-26-6) have points in four straight games, their longest point streak since the first five games of Jim Montgomery's tenure.
Tuesday was an important point in the schedule for the Blues, who will play their next four games (and six of the next eight) against teams currently in a playoff position. They'll also play eight of the next 10 games on the road, beginning with Thursday night against the Capitals.
Creative Kyrou
Kyrou scored eight minutes into the first period, finishing a nifty toe drag around Jamie Oleksiak on a won Blues faceoff in the neutral zone. Kyrou tiptoed around Oleksiak and then found space to beat Joey Daccord. It was Kyrou’s 24th goal of the season and his first since Feb. 4 against Edmonton.
Kyrou also contributed to the Blues’ second goal of the night when he drew a tripping penalty by Eeli Tolvanen in the Seattle zone on an extended St. Louis possession. The Blues took just eight seconds to capitalize on the ensuing power play with Sundqvist’s goal.
Sundqvist scored his fifth goal of the season from the slot after Thomas won the faceoff, recovered the puck on the wall and fed Pavel Buchnevich in the corner. Buchnevich waited out the Seattle penalty killers, walked the puck closer before spotting Sundqvist open between the hashmarks.
Sundqvist tied his career high with three power-play goals on the season. He also had three power-play goals in 2022-23, when he split time between Detroit and Minnesota.
Thomas had the secondary assist on the Sundqvist goal, which ensured that his point streak would reach seven games. It was his second seven-game point streak of the season. Thomas’ career-long point streak is 17 games, done in the spring of 2022.
In the first period, the Blues outshot Seattle 14-4.
Busting it wide open
The Blues turned a 2-0 lead into a 6-0 laugher during a four-goal second period in which all four St. Louis goals came in just 6:45 of game time.
Thomas (5:10), Bolduc (8:23), Fowler (9:45) and Neighbours (11:55) got on the board for the Blues, the first time this season that St. Louis had a plus-4 goal margin in a period. It was the first time since April 10 vs. Chicago that the Blues were plus-4 in a period.
The Blues responded after the Kraken owned the first seven shots on goal in the second period, including two on the power play. But St. Louis ripped off 14 of the next 17 shots to regain control of the game, and show it on the scoreboard.
Thomas scored when he swatted his own rebound out of midair. Daccord protested the call, claiming Thomas used a high stick to hit the puck into the net, but Kraken coach Dan Bylsma did not challenge the goal. It was the third time in the last four games that Thomas scored at least one goal.
Bolduc scored about three minutes later when Sundqvist found him driving to the back post, securing Sundqvist’s first multi-point game since Nov. 11, 2023. Bolduc added his second of the night early in the third period when he deflected Mathieu Joseph's shot from the blue line.
Fowler’s point shot at 9:45 evaded traffic in the slot and the net-front to chase Daccord, and force Nikke Kokko to make his NHL debut for the Kraken in goal. Neighbours ended a 10-game goal drought by hitting an open net with 8:05 remaining in the second period.
It was the fourth time this season (all since Christmas) that the Blues scored four goals in a period, joining the first period vs. Nashville (Dec. 27), the third period in Columbus (Jan. 4) and the first period vs. Anaheim (Jan. 9).
