Philip Broberg's four points lead Blues past Canadiens, 6-1, for seventh win in a row

ST. LOUIS — In a matchup of the two hottest teams in the NHL, the Blues extended their win streak to seven games with a 6-1 win over the Canadiens on Tuesday night at Enterprise Center.
Philip Broberg led the Blues with a goal and three assists, while Jordan Kyrou, Dylan Holloway, Robert Thomas, Alexandre Texier and Zack Bolduc (power play) also scored for the Blues. Nick Suzuki scored for Montreal.
The Blues improved to 13-2-2 since the break, and handed the Canadiens just their second regulation loss since the break.
With the win, the Blues also might acquire a new target in the playoff chase: the Minnesota Wild. After Minnesota's loss to Vegas on Tuesday night, the Blues are just two points behind the Wild for the first wild-card spot in the Western Conference. The Wild do have a game in hand on the Blues.
St. Louis entered the night three points up on Vancouver (one game in hand) and four points up on Calgary (three games in hand) for the second wild-card spot in the conference.
The Blues will look to extend their win streak to eight games when they travel to Nashville to play the Predators on Thursday night.
OK, Bro
Broberg had the first four-point game of his career on Tuesday night, as all three of his assists were of the primary variety vs. Montreal, and he added a third-period goal.
It was the first time that Broberg and fellow former Oiler Holloway each had multiple points in the same game, and both of them did so in the first period alone.
On Kyrou’s goal with 1:53 remaining in the first period, Broberg held the puck at the top of the zone, handed off for Kyrou, who waited for the traffic in the high slot to clear before releasing a shot that appeared to glance off something at the side of the net.
It was Kyrou’s 31st goal of the season, and his seventh in the last seven games. It also extended his point streak to seven games. Holloway, who extended his own point streak to eight games, started the sequence by barreling into Alexandre Carrier along the boards, a massive hit that helped exact a dose of revenge for a hit Holloway took in front of the Canadiens bench earlier in the period.
After Suzuki tied the game at 1 just 47 seconds later, Broberg helped the Blues retake the lead heading into the first intermission. Broberg’s point shot was deflected by Holloway past Montreal goaltender Samuel Montembeault by Holloway with 4.2 seconds remaining in the period to make it 2-1 Blues after 20 minutes.
Broberg took just 3:21 in the second period to pick up his third assist of the night on Thomas’ goal at 4 on 4. Zack Bolduc barely held on to the blue line with his skate to remain onside, allowing Thomas to rip his 19th goal of the season to give the Blues a 3-1 lead.
Broberg scored a goal of his own at 10:12 of the third period to give the Blues a 5-1 lead, handcuffing Montembeault and ending his night in St. Louis.
Strong start
After two consecutive games of subpar performances (relative to the high standards the Blues have set for themselves) in wins over Chicago and Nashville, the Blues of late returned to form during the first period on Tuesday night.
The Blues had the first nine shots on goal of the evening, as Montreal’s first shot didn’t come until nearly 12 minutes had elapsed in the first period. That first credited shot was also a clear on the penalty kill that happened to roll in on Jordan Binnington at the other end of the ice.
The Canadiens’ first shot from the offensive zone came with 6:44 remaining in the first period from Christian Dvorak. At that point, the Blues already had 11 shots on goal.
St. Louis constantly disrupted Montreal’s attempted exits from their own zone, creating more offensive zone time and wearing down the Canadiens with a forecheck that has been improved since the 4 Nations break. In the period, the Blues had more shots on goal (14) than the Canadiens had shot attempts (13).
The territorial advantage eventually turned into a 2-1 lead at the end of the period courtesy of goals from Kyrou and Holloway.
