PITTSBURGH — Sidney Crosby recorded his 1,700th NHL point in Monday’s win against the St. Louis Blues.

The Pittsburgh Penguins captain, who had three points in the 6-3 victory at PPG Paints Arena, hit his latest milestone in third period. He worked the puck from low to high to Erik Karlsson, who fired a shot that Bryan Rust steered behind Blues goalie Joel Hofer.

Moments later, as the PPG Paints Arena public address announcer acknowledged the rare milestone and fans chanted his name, Crosby politely waived to the crowd.

Rust’s goal, which gave the Penguins a 4-2 lead, ended up being the game-winner.

Rust had two goals after scoring his first of the year in Saturday’s loss to Columbus.

The Penguins could not have asked for a much better start on their home ice. The smaller crowd at PPG Paints Arena was amped up after the Penguins scored twice in the first 55 seconds of the game. Those goals went to Rust and Anthony Mantha.

But for the second time in 10 games they were unable to hold onto a two-goal lead. They blew this one before the end of the first period. Both Blues goals came off of turnovers — the first one by rookie Harrison Brunicke and the second by Karlsson.

With his first in black and gold, Parker Wotherspoon made it 3-2 early in the second.

With that assist from Crosby, Rust pushed the lead to 4-2 in the third. After Mathieu Joseph pulled the Blues back within one, Crosby and Evgeni Malkin scored to put it away.

Crosby, Rust and Karlsson all finished with three points in the win. Malkin had two.

Tristan Jarry stopped 26 of 29 shots to extend his personal winning streak to three.

It was over when ...

Crosby made it 5-3 with 3:21 left in regulation. Rust sprung him for a breakaway. Hofer made the first save on Crosby but the captain followed it up for a goal.

Stat of the game

9 — players in NHL history who have tallied 1,700 career points. Four have played with the Penguins. They are Crosby, Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr and Ron Francis.

Around the boards

— With Rickard Rakell going on injured reserve, Filip Hallander was promoted to the top line to play with Rust and Sidney Crosby. His forechecking was very noticeable and he picked up an assist on Rust’s goal by winning a puck battle along the boards.

— Ville Koivunen was in the lineup after he was recalled from the American Hockey League on Sunday. He skated on the third line alongside Tommy Novak and fellow rookie Ben Kindel. It was a rough evening for that trio. They were on the ice for the first two Blues goals, Novak took a bad penalty and they generated little offensively.

— Brunicke was back in uniform after the Penguins made him a healthy scratch the previous two games as part of their development plan for him. The rookie struggled in this one. He turned the puck over and then failed to pick up his man on the first St. Louis goal. He made a few other careless plays with the puck and took a penalty.

— Wotherspoon’s goal was scored during a delayed penalty and with Jarry pulled. Monday was the second straight game the Penguins scored a 6-on-5 goal like that.

— Philip Tomasino and Connor Clifton were the healthy scratches for the Penguins.

— Coach Dan Muse indicated Kevin Hayes has been cleared for contact as he works his way back from the upper-body injury he suffered the first day of training camp. Muse said the next step for Hayes will be joining the team for a full-squad practice.

— After Mantha’s first-period goal, a fan fell from the 200 level at PPG Paints Arena and was critically injured. The Penguins said the fan was taken to a local hospital.

Coming up next

The Penguins visit Philadelphia on Tuesday. That rivalry game is the second half of their first back-to-back of the year, and it is also the start of a four-game road trip.
