MONTREAL, Canada — The St. Louis Blues offense just needed a night in Montreal to cure its ills.

The Blues scored four goals on their way to a 4-3 win over the Canadiens Sunday night at the Bell Centre. It was just the second time in the past 12 games that St. Louis scored more than two goals in a game.

Brayden Schenn (two goals, one assist) and Dylan Holloway (one goal, two assists) led the Blues with three-point nights, while Pavel Buchnevich also scored. Jordan Binnington made 21 saves for St. Louis.

Montreal cut the Blues lead to 4-3 with 3:45 remaining on Noah Dobson's extra-attacker goal following a St. Louis icing.

The Blues' poor injury luck nearly continued Sunday when Oskar Sundqvist went down the tunnel with about 14 minutes left in the third period, but he returned with about six minutes left in the game.

One for one

Fittingly, both Logan Mailloux and Zack Bolduc factored into the events of the first period. Mailloux and Bolduc, of course, were traded for each other over the summer as the Blues tried to use their surplus of wingers to improve their defensive pipeline.

Mailloux took a hooking penalty 2:48 into the game. After the Blues killed the penalty, Bolduc was called for slashing at 7:59 of the first period. With Bolduc in the box, Schenn scored to give the Blues a 1-0 lead.

Cam Fowler's point shot deflected off Mike Matheson in the slot and bounced directly to Schenn at the side of the net, and the Blues captain buried it into the open cage.

When the Canadiens tied the game at 1 with 7:50 remaining in the first period, both Mailloux and Bolduc had roles. Lane Hutson scored when he sneaked through the middle of the ice and past an apparent miscommunication between Mailloux and Matt Luff about who was responsible for the activating defenseman.

Hutson stick-handled his way around Binnington at the net to finish in front of Mailloux. Bolduc picked up the primary assist on the play.

While Bolduc and Mailloux were the more high-profile players taking on their former teams, Alexandre Texier was also suiting up in his first game against St. Louis since his contract was terminated in November. Texier forfeited about $800,000 to terminate his contract and sign as a free agent in Montreal.

Texier was on Montreal's second line with Oliver Kapanen and Ivan Demidov. Both Bolduc and Texier were on the second power-play unit for the Canadiens.

Caufield's goal with 57 seconds remaining in the first period gave Montreal a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes, thanks to a timely pinch by Dobson and an on-target pass from Nick Suzuki.

Bang, bang

It didn't take long for the Blues to turn a 2-1 Habs first-intermission lead into a 3-2 Blues advantage.

St. Louis scored twice in the opening 65 seconds of the second period, as Holloway and Buchnevich both found the back of the net.

Colton Parayko sifted a pass through the neutral zone that found Schenn as he led a two-on-one with Holloway. Schenn avoided a check from Hutson and shoveled a pass to a driving Holloway, who finished with a backhand at 26 seconds.

The assist gave Schenn his 100th multi-point game as a Blue, becoming the 13th player in St. Louis history to reach that mark.

Buchnevich scored his second goal of the road trip on a feed from Robert Thomas to the front of the net. It was Buchnevich's seventh point in his past nine games.

Binnington made sure the lead held in the second period by making highlight-reel saves on Kapanen and Demidov on the power play.

Luff in

Luff made his Blues debut Sunday night in Montreal, entering the lineup in place of the injured Jordan Kyrou. Kyrou suffered a lower-body injury Saturday in Ottawa and will get an MRI done when the Blues are back in St. Louis.

Luff was playing his first NHL game since April 2023, when he was with the Red Wings. Sunday was Luff's 107th career game in the NHL, previously playing for Los Angeles (64), Nashville (23) and Detroit (19). This season with AHL affiliate Springfield (Massachusetts), Luff had 14 points in 17 games.

He signed a two-way contract with the Blues over the summer.

Tyler Tucker replaced Matthew Kessel on defense in the only other lineup change to skaters, while Binnington got the crease one night after Joel Hofer played in Ottawa.
