FBI back at scene of Reedley biolab investigation as part of new Las Vegas raid

FRESNO, Calif. — A decades-old cold-storage facility in Reedley closed three years ago after an investigation is back under FBI scrutiny — and again, it’s tied to an illegal biomedical laboratory.
On Saturday, the FBI raided a home in Las Vegas, where they found “evidence of possible biological material to include refrigerators with vials containing unknown liquids,” according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, which assisted in serving the search warrant. One suspect was taken into custody.
A day later, the FBI was at an address on I Street in Reedley for what it called a “court authorized law enforcement activity in support of the FBI Las Vegas Field Office.”
That address is on the same parcel of land as the warehouse that was shut down in 2022 after city code enforcement found evidence of a biomedical lab illegally distributing misbranded COVID-19 test kits. It was also housing dozens of refrigerators filled with vials of blood, viruses and other infectious agents; containers of laboratory chemicals; hundreds of laboratory mice; and an array of other lab equipment.
The incident led to the arrest of a Chinese national and a congressional investigation into how the laboratory (where investigators found 20 potentially infectious agents besides the COVID-19) could operate unnoticed.
The FBI’s activity at the warehouse on Sunday was acknowledged quickly by the city of Reedley.
In a social media post, it said it was aware of “significant speculation about activity” at the warehouse, but would only confirm that it was not related to any ICE enforcement actions.
On Monday, City Manager Nicole R. Zieba told The Bee that the city was notified that the FBI was obtaining a search warrant for the warehouse, which she said was closed and cleared of “all biologicals, chemicals, and lab equipment.”
They were “removed and destroyed under court-approved abatement warrants,” she said.
“The only remaining items that had been in that facility were the recalled and expired medical test kits (pregnancy and COVID tests) and boxes of paperwork that the city did not have authority to destroy.”
How are the two biolabs connected?
While the information coming out of the Las Vegas raid is limited, several media outlets have reported a somewhat convoluted connection between the home and the Reedley warehouse.
Property records show the home was owned by David Destiny Discovery, LLC, a company that traces back to Jia Bei Zhu and business partner Zhaoyan Wang.
Zhu, also known as David He, is the Chinese national accused of being behind the Reedley lab. Both he and Wang were indicted following the discovery of the lab in 2022. They were living in Clovis at the time.
