Navy clarifies that sailors can wear their uniforms despite tensions due to war with Iran

SAN DIEGO — There has been some confusion in San Diego and other Navy towns about whether sailors can wear their uniforms in public while the U.S. is at war with Iran, leading to a fleet-wide advisory on Tuesday.
“There is no directive on uniform wear for Sailors in the continental United States traveling to and from work, out in town, or at off-base events,” the advisory says. “Sailors can wear uniforms as they normally do, but should always be aware of their surroundings and act accordingly for their own safety.
“Some commands may have recommended their Sailors to consider not wearing uniforms in public, at mass gatherings, or on public transportation. That recommendation is not a directive.”
San Diego is home to the largest Navy installation on the West Coast, and it’s the permanent port of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, which is currently the flagship of a carrier strike group in the Middle East.
