DETROIT — Will Robertson saw the ball in the air and thought, “just make a play.”

The Chicago White Sox left fielder sprinted near the corner, tracking Spencer Torkelson’s long fly-ball.

“Off the bat, I honestly thought it was foul,” Robertson said. “But with the wind, you have to go for it. As I was running, I was like, ‘Oh, this is coming back,’ and then make a play.”

Robertson timed his leap perfectly, extended his glove over the wall and made a tremendous catch for the first out of the sixth inning.

“Looking back you’re like, ‘Oh, wow, that’s probably the highest I’ve ever jumped before in my life,'” he said.

Robertson aided the Sox offensively in the seventh inning with a game-tying RBI single. Lenyn Sosa drove in two with a single in the eighth to give the Sox the lead in a 6-4 victory against the Detroit Tigers in front of 29,292 on Sunday at Comerica Park.

The Sox (55-89) took two of three in the series, won six of seven on their trip and completed a stretch of 17 games in 17 days with a 10-7 record.

“We talked in the beginning of the month about finishing strong and we just wanted to do our thing and do it the right way, play hard and do the things we can control,” manager Will Venable said. “For it to end in wins like this and a road trip where we win six out of seven at the end of a 17-game stretch, just tons of credit to our group for just grinding and fighting.”

The Sox jumped ahead Sunday with a two-out, two-run double by designated hitter Andrew Benintendi.

But the Sox had a shaky bottom of the first. The Tigers loaded the bases with no outs via a walk, double and another walk.

Torkelson then hit a fly-ball to shallow center field. Gleyber Torres, the runner on third, had no intentions of trying to score as center fielder Brooks Baldwin caught the ball. Baldwin’s throw to the infield went way wide of the plate and skipped away from catcher Kyle Teel. Two runs scored on the throwing error, while the runner on first — Riley Greene — advanced to third.

Greene scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Wenceel Pérez to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead, with Robertson making a nice running catch to secure the out.

Sosa tied the score in the third with a 451-foot solo home run to center field. It was his team-leading 20th home run of the season.

“I definitely wasn’t expecting that this year, but now that I’ve reached that number, it feels good,” Sosa said through an interpreter.

The Tigers reclaimed the lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to left by Zach McKinstry.

Robertson made sure the Tigers didn’t extend the lead in the sixth with the sensational catch to rob Torkelson of the home run.

“That was serious ups,” Venable said. “That was impressive. We’ll remember that, that was a good one.”

Sox starter Davis Martin called the play “incredible.”

That was the last batter for Martin, who allowed four runs (two earned) on two hits with three strikeouts and three walks in 5 1/3 innings.

“The first inning, just a lot going on,” Martin said. “I think I was trying to do way too much, trying to be too perfect. To go 5 1/3 after what that first inning looked like, just very proud of that.”

Robertson then made the offensive contribution in the seventh with the two-out RBI single to right field against reliever Tommy Kahnle to even the score at 4.

“I was just trying to have a good at-bat,” Robertson said. “Two outs, runner in scoring position, you’re just trying to get the job done. Got something in the zone. Didn’t hit it the hardest (87.2 mph exit velocity), but got the job done.”

The Sox loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth. Will Vest entered for the Tigers, who also brought the infield in. Sosa singled up the middle, knocking in two runs to give the Sox a 6-4 lead.

“I just tried to have a short swing to put the ball in play,” Sosa said. “He was quick with his delivery. I just wanted to put the ball in play and that’s what I did.”

Reliever Grant Taylor struck out two with a runner on third in the seventh, Jordan Leasure struck out two in the eighth and Mike Vasil had one strikeout in the ninth as the Sox earned the comeback win against the leaders of the American League Central.

“It’s just a good team win against a very good team,” Martin said.
