SARASOTA, Fla. — It seems like everyone wants a minute of Konnor Griffin’s time these days. Currently rated the consensus top prospect in baseball, the 19-year-old shortstop is one of the most discussed names in MLB.

As the entire baseball world follows Griffin’s battle to crack the Pirates’ opening day roster, the Post-Gazette decided to take a different approach for this story. Griffin was offered the opportunity to select a topic he’d like to be interviewed on, the only rule being that it couldn’t be baseball.

After taking a few days to think it over, Griffin’s topic of choice was one close to his heart: his wedding.

He and his high school sweetheart, Dendy, tied the knot in January, less than a month before he reported to spring training. Below is a transcribed outline of the conversation the Post-Gazette had with Griffin about his special day:

— Post-Gazette: First things first, what made you pick this as your interview topic?

— Griffin: “Just because it’s something other than baseball, and it’s the biggest joy of my life. It was the biggest day of my life, so why not talk about it?”

— Post-Gazette: I think the obvious question on this topic pertains to your age. Not many people get married at 19 years old. What made you think you and Dendy were ready?

— Griffin: “She’s been my partner since eighth grade. We’ve been together for over six years. It was time to finally pull the trigger and have her here by my side full time.”

— Post-Gazette: What was it like planning everything? To my understanding, this all came together pretty quick.

— Griffin: “We did it in three and a half months. Her family was awesome. She was awesome. My family was awesome, too. Everyone was a great team, and we put one great wedding together.”

— Post-Gazette: Were you able to appreciate the entire build up? Or did it sort of just fly by?

— Griffin: “Nah, every moment was a great experience. It’s been something that I’ve had on my mind for a bit. It was something that helped me escape baseball for a little while. Being able to focus on her and our day, that was awesome.”

— Post-Gazette: What was your role in the planning process? What did they leave you in charge of?

— Griffin: “My tasks were to just take care of my guys, my groomsmen. That and making sure we had a cool getaway car. I think I did an OK job with both.”

— Post-Gazette: How many Pirates players were in attendance? Were any of them in the wedding party?

— Griffin: “I had three guys there: Wyatt Sanford, Will Taylor and Derek Berg. Those were three of my buddies I made playing in the minor leagues last year. None of them were in the wedding party, but it was great to have all of them there for our big day.”

— Post-Gazette: I heard you had about 350 people there total. Where was the wedding held, and more importantly, what was on the menu?

— Griffin: “It was in Oxford, Mississippi. The catering company we hired had some great stuff for us. The pork tenderloin was my favorite thing, but there were also all sorts of dips and fruits. Everything was great.”

— Post-Gazette: Who was the best man?

— Griffin: “My dad. He’s my guy! He’s been there for me from the start, so I wanted him there by my side on the biggest day of my life.”

— Post-Gazette: How was the honeymoon?

— Griffin: “It was great. We went to Cabo [San Lucas, Mexico] for a few days. Then right when we went home, it was off to spring training.”

— Post-Gazette: Do you feel older now that you’re a married man?

— Griffin: “Not really. We’re still young, running around. But life is good.”

— Post-Gazette: Old enough to play in the big leagues?

— Griffin: ...

— Post-Gazette: We can save that chat for another time.
