Cowboys lose RB Miles Sanders for season; WR CeeDee Lamb out third consecutive game
Published in Football
FRISCO, Texas — For Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers, the Dallas Cowboys have ruled out wide receiver CeeDee Lamb for a third consecutive game, as he continues to work back from a high ankle sprain that he suffered in week three against the Chicago Bears. The team also ruled out offensive lineman Tyler Booker (high ankle sprain), wide receiver/returner KaVontae Turpin (foot sprain) and linebacker Jack Sanborn (concussion).
Also designated to not play, running back Miles Sanders will be going on the season-ending injured reserve list, according to team executive vice president Stephen Jones in an interview on 105.3 The Fan. Sanders had been dealing with knee and ankle injuries that he suffered in the tie against the Green Bay Packers. While he briefly touched the practice field on Wednesday, he left early and did not return for the rest of the week. Now, he will be done for the year.
On a positive note, the Cowboys will return starting left tackle Tyler Guyton after he missed one game with a concussion. Left guard Tyler Smith, while he is listed as questionable with a knee issue that kept him out for the Jets game, is expected to play on Sunday barring a setback, according to one team source.
Also on the questionable list for the Cowboys, cornerback DaRon Bland (shoulder), cornerback Trevon Diggs (knee) and defensive end Marshawn Kneeland (ankle) will see have status determined before the noon kickoff in Charlotte on Sunday. All three logged limited practices throughout the week, indicating a positive sign toward their availability.
With Sanders going on injured reserve, a roster spot opens up for a player either on the practice squad or waiting to be activated off injured reserve. Wide receiver Jonathan Mingo — who did not practice on Thursday or Friday — and cornerback Caelen Carson have had their practice windows activated and are nearing a return. Running back Phil Mafah is still awaiting the opening of his window, although he would be the most rational replacement for Sanders in the position room. Rookie Jaydon Blue will step into the backup running back role behind starter Javonte Williams.
For the Panthers, starting running back Chuba Hubbard (calf) and starting right tackle Taylor Moton (elbow) have been ruled out for Sunday’s game. Starting tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders (ankle) and starting cornerbacks Mike Jackson (ribs) and Chau Smith-Wade (chest) are listed as questionable.
Players that are on the injury report for Dallas that carry no designation and will play against Carolina include Guyton, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney (hip), defensive end Dante Fowler Jr. (illness), defensive end James Houston (knee), quarterback Joe Milton III (personal), linebacker Kenneth Murray Jr. (knee), safety Juanyeh Thomas (ankle), defensive end Sam Williams (shoulder) and safety Donovan Wilson (elbow/knee).
