If fans wanted goals in the final Blues home game of the season, they got them.
The Blues beat the Penguins 7-5 on Tuesday night to finish the home slate at Enterprise Center this season in the highest-scoring game of the Blues season.
Jimmy Snuggerud and Dylan Holloway each had two goals for the Blues, while Oskar Sundqvist, Logan Mailloux, and Pavel Buchnevich also scored for St. Louis.
Jordan Binnington made 18 saves in what figures to be his last start of the season.
There were four previous games that there were 11 total goals in a game involving the Blues.
The Blues finish the season with a road game on Thursday in Utah.
Give me five
For the second straight night, the Blues scored five straight goals, the first two times all season they ripped off five consecutive goals within a game. On Monday, they turned a 3-1 deficit into a 6-3 win over the Wild. On Tuesday, the Blues were down 4-1 before roaring back.
The run gave the Blues four wins when down multiple goals this season: Nov. 3 vs. Edmonton, March 13 vs. Edmonton, Monday vs. Minnesota and Tuesday vs. Pittsburgh.
After Elmer Soderblom's goal about three minutes into the second period gave the Penguins a 4-1 lead, the Blues responded with three goals in the second period, then added Holloway and Buchnevich's in the third period.
The run of five straight goals ended when Avery Hayes scored his second goal of the game at 12:20 of the third period to trim the Blues lead to 6-5.
Defense was optional for both teams, as there were eight goals on 35 combined shots in the first two periods. That led to Pittsburgh yanking starter Stuart Skinner in favor of Arturs Silovs before the third period began.
21 for 21
Snuggerud matched his jersey number by reaching 21 goals on Tuesday night vs. Pittsburgh. He became the third Blues player to score at least 20 goals this season, joining linemates Robert Thomas (22) and Dylan Holloway (21).
Snuggerud now ranks fourth among NHL rookies in goals, behind just Matthew Schaefer (23), Beckett Sennecke (23) and Oliver Kapanen (22). Snuggerud became the Blues' first rookie 20-goal scorer since Patrik Berglund had 21 in 2008-09. With one more goal, Snuggerud would have the most goals by a Blues rookie since Jim Campbell had 23 in 1996-97.
Snuggerud scored with 1:16 left in the first period to stem the Penguins momentum after Pittsburgh jumped out to a 3-0 lead. After a Dylan Holloway forecheck forced a turnover, Snuggerud found open ice in the slot and received a pass from Robert Thomas from behind the net.
The goal provided some pushback in a lopsided first period that was speckled with Blues turnovers and miscues as Pittsburgh opened up a three-goal lead.
Rutger McGroarty scored about midway through the period on a won faceoff by former Blue Kevin Hayes. Avery Hayes made it 2-0 when he capitalied on Logan Mailloux's bobble at the offensive blue line, and Anthony Mantha extended the lead on a failed exit by Alexey Toropchenko and Oskar Sundqvist.
Snuggerud's second of the night came late in the second period and tied the game at 4 with 4:11 left in the period. With Mantha in the box for roughing, the Blues scored on the ensuing power play when Snuggerud was on the business end of Jake Neighbours' short pass following Holloway's initial shot on goal.
It was Snuggerud's third multi-goal game of the season.
Penguins Light
Like the Wild on Monday night, the Penguins rested many of their key players ahead of their first-round series against the Flyers. In total, Pittsburgh listed 11 players as scratches, and that included stars like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Erik Karlsson.
The Penguins' 20-man roster on Tuesday night was worth a combined $34 million in cap hits, less than half of the roster the Blues ($71.3 million) put on the ice on Tuesday night.
Defenseman Jake Livanavage made his NHL debut for Pittsburgh, just as Viking Gustafsson Nyberg did on Monday night for Minnesota.
One night prior, Minnesota rested players like Kirill Kaprizov, Quinn Hughes, Matt Boldy and Mats Zuccarello against the Blues, icing a lineup worth just $42.8 million in total cap hits.
