SARASOTA, Fla. — Over the past two days, Orioles president of baseball operations Mike Elias defended the rotation that he built this offseason.
Wednesday night, a few hours after the end of the Orioles’ first spring training workout, Elias struck a deal to bolster his rotation with one of the many pitchers remaining in free agency.
The Orioles and right-hander Chris Bassitt have reached an agreement on a one-year, $18.5 million contract, a source with direct knowledge of the deal confirmed to The Baltimore Sun on Wednesday night. The contract is pending Bassitt’s completion of a physical examination.
Bassitt, 36, is an 11-year MLB veteran with a career 83-65 record and a 3.64 ERA. He spent the past three seasons in the American League East with the Toronto Blue Jays, posting a 3.89 ERA and 1.31 WHIP while averaging 180 innings per season.
ESPN was first to report the contract.
